Job Description
Smelting is a pyrometalurgical process that uses heat and chemical reduction to extract pure metal from raw ore. It involves heating ore to high temperatures in a furnace—typically with a reducing agent like coke—to separate valuable metals (e.g., iron, copper) from impurities, which are removed as slag.
Responsibilities
- Furnace operation: Control smelting furnaces, monitoring temperature, pressure, and material flow for efficient extraction.
- Material handling: Charge raw materials (ore concentrates, flux, scrap) into furnaces using cranes or conveyors.
- Production monitoring: Monitor and control chemical reactions, using gauges or computerized systems to maintain material purity.
- Metal casting: Tap, transfer, and pour molten metal into molds or ladles, ensuring proper solidification.
- Safety & maintenance: Adhere to strict safety procedures and perform inspections of equipment and refractory linings.
